B SHAWN COX

B Shawn Cox is a multimedia artist, juror, collector and curator.  Born in Lubbock Texas, with ranching roots in west Texas, he currently lives and works in Austin, Texas.  His vibrant and diverse work has been exhibited and collected throughout the United States in both private and corporate collections.  He has degrees in Architecture and Law but has maintained and developed an evolving art practice for over 30 years.

His work is currently exploring two related paths.  His role as an artist is bound by two responsibilities – first to capture, emote and communicate an idea and then, to transform the chosen media itself as part of the expression.  Both paths explore the artist is a cartographer, mapping an understanding of what is while constantly calibrating his own mutable internal compass.   One metaphorically manually constructs visions of an idea from distilled and reassembled handmade components and the other is a graphic, colorful commentary reflecting on social mythology by repurposing and graphically challenging iconographic figurative stereotypes.

polka.dot.rodeo is the most current collection in his evolving body of work with western icons.  This series of paintings on fabric explore the artifice of the western mystique that he watched while sitting on an upholstered sofa as a child though the adult lens of multiple professional degrees, related employment, urban living and a lifelong exploration of visual arts.  This current series offers reflective commentary on social mythology by repurposing iconographic figurative stereotypes in graphic, lyrical, playful, and layered compositions.
